My work schedule is a rotating one for the most part. Every fews weeks I come in for 6:30am. I am not a huge fan of getting up really early, being someone who tends to stay up late it plays havoc with me in many ways. I leave my door in darkness and silence, internally as well as externally.

I love the early mornings though. The light and the quiet awe and inspire me. I leave my house and get to see the world waking up. Things are still, quiet and have a kind of peace to them that I know won’t last. Living in a city and getting to move without the roar and the din of day is something I don’t get often. There are no groups of people talking loudly, no buses and cars roaring by, no honking of horns. I love it.

And the light. The light is worth getting up even as I hate it. As the light comes up, the sun rises, it suffuses everything in its glow. It is amazing. I get to work, I arrive in light. As I walk by the water I have to stop a moment and watch. The quiet waves reflect the light as the sun comes up, and it is beautiful. I sometimes worry that one day I won’t notice it anymore. That is the essence of my early morning commute. I arrive at my workplace in light and sound. By then the world is pretty much awake – buses moving, people talking and the sun shining.
