I Am Back

For those that take the time to read what I post after taking about a month off for various personal reasons. I’ve decided to start up again. I am also going to reserruect Technophilia and give it a serious go.

A Trial I Say!

Amazon sent me an offer for a 30-day trial of the Kindle so I decided to take them up on it. I’ve toyed with getting one but since I could not pick one up and use it I held off. This is a smart move by Amazon to do trials. It looks like they are only doing it for selected Prime customers though. I R SPESHUL. It came today so we’ll see how I like it. I plan on blagging about my thoughts on it in a few days.

On Games…

I played around with the Warhammer MMO for a bit but found it lacking. Looks like WoW is still king for me. With the expansion pre-patch coming tomorrow and the expansion one month away I feel my precious little free time slipping away.

The Familia

Mom is back home and doing ok. 2 months of hospital time and physical rehab are not fun. She was glad to be back home. She also complained because I don’t come see her enough. Good sign she is back in the swing of things. My Uncle though, I need to go see him. I may soon.

P.S.

Oh and I cut my hair but am letting the beard come back. Started talking to someone again that I really was kind of distant from for too long. Nice to have them back. I also think I need a vacation but am not sure where. I don’t want to go too far and I mostly want to chill and have some fun. Any ideas?

I myself have been online in some form or another for at least 20 years. It began when I was around fourteen with Compuserve. It grew from that to BBS’, then to usenet, website, and now to all sorts of social networking and personal projects. But this is not so much about my progression as is the progression of people as a whole.

For myself I now have a flickr account, this blag, and a good reads account. I am on multiply, and facebook, but not myspace. I twitter (though not locations I am going to be), and I have just started using last.fm.

It really is no surprise that the largest single usage of the internet revolves around social activities. Humans are, after all, social creatures. But the main question I have here is how much is too much? It’s become expected that a person will have an email address at the least now. But I see people, young and old, putting up information that is rather scary in the implications. I have to wonder if the reality of being online the fact that it is just as real and affects their lives is understood.

We have the worst case – the teenager who killed themself after a myspace prank went bad. But we also have the good stuff, various amazing and interesting blogs. The catharsis of revelation that is postsecret. The ability to connect to people, to find the ones we may have never found otherwise. But, what does it say about us? Our need to publish our lives, to forsake our privacy for some kind of validation? For some attention, or to just say “here I am. I exist.”

As an exercise, try googling yourself. You can find some interesting results. Some of them surprising perhaps. Where is this leading? Will we one day surrender all of our privacy for some online validation to show something off? We have as a whole surrendered a lot of our privacy. Where will is lead? Will we one day become required to publish information? Will our very existence be proven only by being found on google? If we don’t have a blog will we be looked down on?

It is not all doom and gloom though. There are groups like the EFF trying to fight to make sure our rights are not trampled on in regards to privacy, and digital rights.

I met her at random really. A one off twitter that got a reply. And then things moved. The world shifted slightly, not enough for me to notice but it began. And I replied back. And it began little by little. Too small to notice really. Another shift. And then we talked. No stilted communication over hours, but immediate and now. And then the world began to turn more and more. Faster and faster, and if I noticed I did not care.

She’s become a part of me now. In this time, in this place that is my life she is there. I don’t know what will happen again, I just know that what is now is now. And this time, this place is a good one. I hope that I can build it into something more. And that is something on which I can rejoice.
